The Most Important Building Projects for the United States

Here's Joseph Stiglitz in the New York Times talking about spending $1 trillion on economic stimulus. A lot of it is for tax credits, medicare, etc. Here's one concrete proposal:
There are other elementary principles that help guide the design of a good stimulus. The government could, for instance, temporarily pay (through a tax credit) part of the cost of new private investment for companies that are spending more than, say, 80 percent of what they have spent annually in recent years on equipment like computers and machinery. This would be a high-powered, low-cost stimulus.

Also saw this in the Times, a wish list for the New York area:

Local officials see a future filled with the realization of colossal construction projects that have already been planned, including a new Tappan Zee Bridge; a tunnel under the Hudson River to Penn Station to relieve New Jersey Transitdelays; a Nassau hub retail and entertainment cluster around a revamped Nassau Coliseum; and upgraded sewer plants to remove more nitrogen from Long Island Sound.

Such projects could spur the economy by providing jobs: 35,000 for every $1 billion spent on infrastructure, according to New Jersey officials. Regional officials also hope for more housing vouchers for the poor, and for block grants to rebuild playgrounds, sidewalks and police forces, money they say was grudgingly dribbled out during the Bush administration.
