Bring back Smart Highways as a way to bring back a better infrastructure instead of just a rebuilt infrastructure. Doing so would make travel less expensive and safer for everyone.

Here's an AP story on what Obama plans, including lots of spending on highways and bridges. The trouble is that the projects that are "shovel-ready" are old-style, dumb infrastructure spends. But I guess we can't postpone everything to make them smarter.

Several smart highways were under construction several years ago. One was Interstate 81 in Virginia but it appears the Bush Administration pulled the plug on Smart Highways.

I agree. It would also help us save fuel. How much would this cost, and where would the first ones go? We need ideas of first steps.
